Lent
I chose to give up something I enjoy for lent, as a reminder of what Jesus did for each of us. For Lent this year I decided to give of my much loved coffee. It would be a sacrifice, but I knew I could do it, since I went 40 + days last year. Todd did not think that coffee was enough of a sacrifice, so he encouraged (I guess you could say encouraged) me to give of Diet Coke for 40 days! That silver can is one of the first things that I want to see when I wake up in the morning.
The first couple days I missed the fizz early in the morning. I did not miss the caffeine like I thought I would. I still have my coffee. I have now completed 8 day, 14 hours and 39 minutes.
Tonight as I was researching the history of giving up things for Lent I found interesting information in Wikipedia.
There are traditionally forty days in Lent which are marked by fasting, both from foods and festivities, and by other acts of penance. The three traditional practices to be taken up with renewed vigour during Lent are prayer (justice towards God), fasting (justice towards self), and almsgiving (justice towards neighbour). Today, some people give up a vice of theirs, add something that will bring them closer to God, and often give the time or money spent doing that to charitable purposes or organizations.
Over Lent, I will spend time writing about Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving
I also found some great news!
When observing fasting or abstinence during Lent, regard must be paid to the fact that Sundays are Feast Days, so the fast or abstinence may be broken. If one counts the days from Ash Wednesday to the day before Easter Sunday, excluding the Sundays, one will see that there are forty of them, corresponding to the number of days Christ spent in the wilderness.
I counted the days on my calendar twice! Sunday will be a great Diet Coke Day!
Blessings
