March 8 - special dinner

Special Dinner

What are you waiting for? When was the last time you used that “special” china, the good silverware and the crystal glassware? Thanksgiving or Christmas? Easter is coming…. Why wait for holidays to take out the special place setting for our families?

When I was growing up my mom served most Sunday suppers (yes, I said supper. Growing up on a farm we had supper!) on her best china, with grandma’s silverware and crystal glasses, that mom and dad received as a wedding gift in 1965. My mom believed that the “good stuff” was meant to be used and shared with the people she loved. It was important that we as children learned to set a formal table, use cloth napkins and knew what fork to use and when.

When my brother’s and my families come home, we always eat in the dining room with the good dishes. This is my mom’s way to say you are important to me and I want you to have my best.

What are you waiting for? Make a special dinner for your family. Use the good dishes that only come out on special occasions. Some of you may have dishes that have never been used. Celebrate being a family. Let your family know they are special and they deserve your best!

March 7 - family quote

Families are like fudge –
mostly sweet with a few nuts.

March 6 - gifts to children

The greatest gifts you can give your children,
Are the roots of responsibility,
And the wings of independence.

March 5 - Lent - 40 days?

Lent

I chose to give up something I enjoy for lent, as a reminder of what Jesus did for each of us. For Lent this year I decided to give of my much loved coffee. It would be a sacrifice, but I knew I could do it, since I went 40 + days last year. Todd did not think that coffee was enough of a sacrifice, so he encouraged (I guess you could say encouraged) me to give of Diet Coke for 40 days! That silver can is one of the first things that I want to see when I wake up in the morning.

The first couple days I missed the fizz early in the morning. I did not miss the caffeine like I thought I would. I still have my coffee. I have now completed 8 day, 14 hours and 39 minutes.
Tonight as I was researching the history of giving up things for Lent I found interesting information in Wikipedia.

There are traditionally forty days in Lent which are marked by fasting, both from foods and festivities, and by other acts of
penance. The three traditional practices to be taken up with renewed vigour during Lent are prayer (justice towards God), fasting (justice towards self), and almsgiving (justice towards neighbour). Today, some people give up a vice of theirs, add something that will bring them closer to God, and often give the time or money spent doing that to charitable purposes or organizations.

Over Lent, I will spend time writing about Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving

I also found some great news!

When observing fasting or abstinence during Lent, regard must be paid to the fact that Sundays are Feast Days, so the fast or abstinence may be broken. If one counts the days from
Ash Wednesday to the day before Easter Sunday, excluding the Sundays, one will see that there are forty of them, corresponding to the number of days Christ spent in the wilderness.

I counted the days on my calendar twice! Sunday will be a great Diet Coke Day!

March 4 - Morgan's passage

Morgan’s favorite Bible passage

Psalm 37
Of David.
1 [a] Do not fret because of evil men

or be envious of those who do wrong;

2 for like the grass they will soon wither,

like green plants they will soon die away.

3 Trust in the LORD and do good;

dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

4 Delight yourself in the LORD

and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the LORD;

trust in him and he will do this:

6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,

the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;

do not fret when men succeed in their ways,

when they carry out their wicked schemes.

8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;

do not fret—it leads only to evil.

9 For evil men will be cut off,

but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.

Take time to ask your family members about their favorite bible verse and why they chose it. I have the verses hi-lighted in my bible with their name next to it.

Ross’s Favorite Bible Verse

“Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face evermore.” Psalm 105:4

Ross told me that this means to always seek the LORD. He is powerful, strong, wise and in control. At the age of ten, Ross feels that this verse gives him comfort and it was the first verse of the bible that he had memorized.

Andrew’s Favorite Bible Verse

I asked each of my children, “What is your favorite bible verse?” Andrew replied, “John 3:16, because it is simple and to the point.”

John 3:16
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

What is your favorite bible verse and why?
